2. Lighting

Having good lighting can completely change a photo. Natural lighting is our go-to for photography but, because our style generally leans towards bright and airy photography, we sometimes require a little extra light! Normally, for product photos, Courtney sets up backdrops by a large window, and uses the light linked below as needed.

3. Reflector

Reflectors are the unsung heroes of product photography.

They're great for outdoors photography when you need to shine some extra light on your product. In this photo, we used a reflector to specifically highlight the product and dispel any potential shadows.

4. Light Box

A foldable light box is a great idea for product photography, especially when you're taking photos of large quantities of items. For example, when Courtney takes photos of mugs for monthly restocks at Clay Plant Road pottery, she uses a light box to bring focus to the product alone.

Light boxes create even lighting on and around an object, whereas some other lighting setups can create too much dimension. Here you can see some pottery photos Courtney has taken using a light box.

5. DJI OM

This little guy is a lifesaver when you're taking videos with your phone.

Once you've had super smooth footage, you will hate not using it, it's an absolute MUST for us. This hand held stabilization device attaches to your phone and is super helpful for creating video content. And the best part— it’s small and compact, so it doesn’t take up too much space in your bag.

The key takeaway? Great product photography begins before you ever pick up the camera. With the right gear, you’re already on your way to taking professional-quality product photography with ease.
